  3. Matthew 2:23……And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. Who prophesied this?
(No such prophecy found in Old Testament…Maybe in speaking of Jesus as a “Nazarene,” Matthew may be alluding to the “Branch” [Hebrew nes.er] of Isa 11:1)
  4. Nazarene most likely means of or from Nazareth
  5. It is said that Jesus had his earthly ministry for 3 and 1/2 years. How do we know this? (According to John’s Gospel, Jesus attended at least three Passover feasts through the course of His ministry: one in John 2:13, another in 6:4, and in 11:55–57. Many Bible scholars believe there was another Passover, not mentioned in the Gospels, which fell between the Passovers of John 2 and John 6. This would lengthen Jesus’ ministry to more than 3 years.)

1) Gold, frankincense, and myrrh were the gifts that the wise men brought for Jesus. What do they signify?
(That gold was presented to Jesus is token of His royalty; the frankincense in token of His divinity, and the myrrh, of His sufferings OR that the kingly, priestly and prophetic offices of Christ are to be respectively seen in these gifts).
2) [When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him….Matthew 3:16]
If Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit, why did the Spirit of God need to descend on him?
(A sign for John the Baptist… John 1:32-34
Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”)

Bible Knowledge Challenge 9….Answers..

  1. What did John the Baptist call the Pharisees and Sadducees when he saw them coming to his baptism? (Brood of vipers)
  2. What did John the Baptist ask the Pharisees and Sadducees to bear or produce? (Fruits worthy of repentance)
  3. What did John the Baptist mean by saying this….God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
(John the Baptist rebuked the Jews for their belief in nationalistic salvation. Abraham as our father means that they were trusting in their physical descent for salvation, rather than in God. John was telling them that even if all of them died, God was able to raise up a seed for Abraham from stones).
  4. What did John the Baptist mean by saying this….Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (With John’s preaching, divine judgment had already begun. The arrival of Jesus Christ would test all men. Those found fruitless would be destroyed just as a fruitless tree is cut down and thrown into the fire).
  5. What did John the Baptist mean by saying this….. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (The coming of the Holy Spirit in full power at Pentecost would be a great blessing as experienced by the Apostles and believers in Jesus Christ, but it would also eventually bring judgment on the unrepentant. Some interpret ‘fire’ as a greater anointing in ministry associated with signs and wonders. Fire can also be interpreted as sufferings that believers in Jesus Christ experience).
