The Latin word&nbsp; apocryphus means \u201csecret, or non-canonical\u201d. Most Catholic, Coptic, Orthodox and Greek churches consider these as authoritative scriptures, but they are generally regarded as non-canonical by most others. These books were written in the period between 2nd century B.C. and the 1st century A.D.&nbsp; 14\/15 extra books that make up the Apocrypha are included in certain Bibles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Old Testament Apocrypha<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. The First Book of Esdras (also known as Third Esdras)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. The Second Book of Esdras (also known as Fourth Esdras)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Tobit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Judith<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. The Additions to the Book of Esther<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. The Wisdom of Solomon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Ecclesiasticus, or the Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Baruch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. The Letter of Jeremiah (Some put this as the last chapter of Baruch. When this is done the number of books is fourteen instead of fifteen.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10. The Prayer of Azariah and the Song of the Three Young Men<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11. Susanna<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12. Bel and the Dragon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>13. The Prayer of Manasseh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>14. The First Book of Maccabees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>15. The Second Book of Maccabees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>&nbsp;New Testament Apocrypha<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;They are dated beginning in the 2nd century A. D. They try to \u201cimitate\u201d the authentic New Testament books.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; A few examples<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; 1. \u201cGospel of Thomas\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; 2. \u201cGospel of Peter\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; 3. \u201cProtoevangelium of James\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; 4. \u201cGospel of Bartholomew\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; 5. \u201cInfancy Story of Thomas\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; 6. \u201cActs of Peter,\u201d \u201cActs of John,\u201d \u201cActs of Paul,\u201d etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Reasons why Apochrypha should not be included in the Bible<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;A. These books were never included in the Hebrew Canon of the Old Testament. This is noted by consulting writers such as Josephus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;B. Jesus and the Apostles never quoted from these books<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;C. Jewish writers such as Philo and Josephus did not accept them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;D. Jerome (About 400 A. D.), whose Latin Vulgate is the basis for the Catholic Bible, believed them to be \u201capocryphal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;E.
